Resize and convert an image locally

  1. Select a still PNG, JPEG or WebP from your device, or use the original local sample.
  2. Choose a supported output format and maximum dimensions. Aspect ratio is retained; enlargement is off by default.
  3. Set JPEG or WebP quality, choose how to handle transparency, then convert. Compare the actual file size and download the current result.

Convert WebP to PNG, PNG to WebP, or JPG to PNG

Choose an existing WebP, PNG or JPEG image, then select the output format. JPG and JPEG are the same supported input format. Use WebP to PNG when you need lossless output with transparency, PNG to WebP to try a smaller web asset, or JPG to PNG when your workflow requires PNG. Converting an already lossy image cannot recover lost detail, and PNG output can be larger. The available output formats are verified in your browser before use.

What does “optimize” mean here?

This tool redraws and re-encodes one image. Reducing dimensions or using a lossy format can reduce bytes, but conversion is not guaranteed to make a file smaller. PNG is lossless and ignores the quality setting. JPEG cannot store transparency, so the selected background is applied. PNG and WebP can keep an alpha channel or flatten it.

Browser encoding and image metadata

Available encoders are probed in your browser. Both the returned MIME type and file signature are checked so an unsupported format is not silently downloaded with a wrong extension. This tool does not offer AVIF. Browser decoding applies the image orientation where supported. Redrawing does not copy the original EXIF or IPTC records, but browsers can add their own encoding metadata. Color profiles, colors and fine detail can change; this is not a forensic metadata-removal guarantee.

Limits, cancellation and compatibility

Inputs are limited to 20 MiB, 8,192 pixels per side and 16,777,216 pixels total. Headers are checked before decoding. Output dimensions are at most 4,096 pixels per side and output files are capped at 20 MiB. Animated PNG/WebP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and remote URLs are not accepted. Processing uses a cancellable worker and stops after 20 seconds. Changing inputs clears the old download. A current browser with worker image decoding and OffscreenCanvas is required.

Does my image leave the browser?

No upload or remote image request is made. Processing uses the selected file and temporary in-memory results. A download message means the browser was asked to save the file, not that a disk write was verified.
