On attention, silence, and the things we almost miss.

There is a moment before a familiar sound when the room seems to make space for it. A kettle gathers itself. A train slows beyond the window. A person takes a breath before deciding what to say. Most days, we hurry past that moment. We are listening for the thing we recognize, not the small change that announces it.
For this written episode, imagine sitting in the same place for a few minutes without naming what you hear. Let the sounds arrive as shapes: a low line, a short interruption, a pattern that returns. There is no test at the end. The point is simply to notice how much of a place exists outside the story we usually tell about it.
Attention can begin without a grand decision. It might be the pause before putting on headphones, or a walk with no particular destination. When we stop trying to turn every quiet moment into useful time, something else becomes possible: a little room to be surprised.
