Good docs.
Less friction.
Give your ideas a place to make sense. Manual is a small, considered starting point for the things your readers need to know.
A template, with a working handbook. Manual is a fictional product identity. These sample docs explain the static files included here. There is no hosted service, account, or separate CLI.
GET UP AND RUNNING
Your first page.
Start with a folder and a browser. You do not need a package manager, an account, or a development server.
-
Keep the files together
Extract the downloaded folder before opening it. The document loads its stylesheet and classic script from the same directory. Renaming the folder is fine; moving only the HTML file breaks those relative paths.
Folder structuremanual/ ├── index.html ├── styles.css ├── script.js ├── README.md ├── ASSETS.md └── LICENSE -
Open, then make one small change
Open
index.htmldirectly in your browser. In a text editor, replace the first heading with your project name. Save the file and reload the browser. Your updated heading should appear immediately.index.html<h1>Your project.<br /> <span>Clearly explained.</span> </h1> -
Follow the reader's path
Replace this introduction first, then write a short setup guide and a reference for recurring questions. Keep section IDs stable when editing titles. The contents rail and search results link to those IDs.
Before you share, check the page at a narrow width and navigate it using only Tab and Enter. Read Configuration for metadata and publishing details.
A FEW CONSIDERED DEFAULTS
Make room for you.
There is no configuration service. Content lives in HTML, visual choices live in CSS, and the small interactions live in JavaScript.
Set the tone
Edit the custom properties at the top of styles.css.
Keep text and focus indicators easy to distinguish from their
backgrounds. The accent is used for links, the primary action, and
the current chapter.

--ink: #27252e;

--rail-width: 264px;
}
Give each section an address
Use a unique, lowercase id without spaces. Match that
ID in the contents link. Add data-search and a short
data-title to include the section in local search.
Search indexes the first 24 sections, up to 12,000 text characters
each; keep sections focused.
<section id="installation" tabindex="-1"
class="doc-section" data-search
data-title="Installation">
<h2>Installation</h2>
<p>Explain the first useful step.</p>
</section>
<a href="#installation">Installation</a>
Publish with intention
The supplied preview includes noindex,follow to keep an
uncustomized copy out of search results. For your finished site,
remove that robots directive, write an accurate page title and
description, and add your own canonical URL if appropriate. Upload
the complete folder to a static host you control.
Replace the fictional name and example changelog before publication. Keep the MIT license with distributed copies of the code. The README explains the creator credit and file layout.
THE USEFUL DETAILS
A small surface area.
Build the page from the elements you already have. These are markup conventions, not an API or a component package.
.doc-sectionSTRUCTURE
A readable chapter with a dividing rule and scroll offset. Give
it an id and tabindex="-1" so an
in-page link can move keyboard focus to it.
data-searchDISCOVERY
Opt a section into the local index. Its
data-title becomes the result label. Matching is
literal, ignores letter case, and requires each space-separated
word to occur in the indexed section text.
.code-blockEXAMPLES
Wrap a pre and code element for a
scrollable example. A copy button's data-copy must
match the code element's unique ID. Escape < as
< when displaying HTML.
.calloutCONTEXT
Use an aside for a short note that helps a reader
decide what to do. Keep required setup steps in the main article
so they are easy to find.
<details>DISCLOSURE
A native expandable answer. Put the question in
summary and the answer after it. It works with a
mouse, touch, and the keyboard without any JavaScript.
Local search behavior
Search checks section titles and text already in this document. It does not fetch other pages, rank a remote index, or save a query. Queries are limited to 120 characters. The result count reports matching sections, not individual occurrences. Empty search returns you to the page; a query with no matches says so.
Copy behavior
The button first tries the browser clipboard. If that is unavailable, it tries a local selection copy. A success message appears only after the browser reports success. If both paths fail, a selected text field opens so you can use your system copy command. Browser permissions can restrict both methods inside an embedded preview.
WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF
A way forward.
Start with the smallest check. Most local setup issues come down to a missing file, an ID, or a browser permission.
The page has no styling
Check that you extracted the folder and that
styles.css sits beside index.html.
The filename is case-sensitive on many hosts. If you moved it
into another directory, update the stylesheet's
href in the document head.
Reload after saving. If the problem only occurs after publishing, inspect the requested file path and its HTTP status in your browser's developer tools.
Search cannot find my new section
Add data-search, a unique id, and a
descriptive data-title to the section. Reload the
page after editing: the index is built once at startup. Only
the first 24 sections and the first 12,000 text characters in
each are indexed.
Search looks for literal words. Try a shorter word that actually appears in the text; it does not correct spelling or search linked pages.
The copy button asks me to copy manually
Your browser or the preview sandbox may block clipboard access. Use the selected text field that appears, then press your system copy shortcut or use the browser's Copy command. You can also select the original code directly.
A manual-copy message means no automatic copy was confirmed. Opening the downloaded page on its own may change browser permissions, but it is not required to read any example.
A contents link goes to the wrong place
Make sure every section ID is unique and the link's fragment
exactly matches it, including letter case. For example,
href="#reference" targets
id="reference". Do not put a full website URL in
a local chapter link.
Enhanced links scroll and focus the section inside this document, including in a restricted preview. Without JavaScript, ordinary fragment navigation works in the standalone file.
A long code line does not fit my phone
Code examples have their own horizontal scroll area so indentation and exact text stay intact. Swipe inside the code area or focus it and use the arrow keys. The surrounding page should stay within the viewport.
Prefer short lines when authoring examples. For ordinary paragraphs and headings, the stylesheet wraps long words instead of widening the page.
A RECORD OF THE DETAILS
Notes along the way.
An example release log for this fictional handbook. Replace it with a record of changes to your own project.
Initial edition
EXAMPLE ENTRYA foundation for clear documentation
This sample edition brings the introduction, setup instructions, configuration notes, markup reference, and common questions into one readable document.
- Contents links provide a direct route to each chapter.
- Local section search supports literal multiword queries.
- Code examples include an optional copy action and a manual fallback.
- Native disclosures keep troubleshooting answers accessible without scripts.
Migration note: no earlier sample edition is included. This is a starter log, not a claim about a live product release.
